Job Description

The marketing and communications specialist is a key member of the University of Maryland College of Education’s marketing and communications team. The position reports to and works closely with the director of marketing and communications to develop and implement strategic and creative marketing and communications strategies that align with and support the college’s vision and strategic priorities. The position assists in amplifying the voice of the college, driving brand awareness, and engaging target audiences through various channels. The specialist will be a strategic thinker with a passion for storytelling and creating compelling, cross-platform digital content that promotes the college’s research, programs and people.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Create engaging written, visual and multimedia content, including social media posts, website copy, press releases, newsletters, brochures, email campaigns, and other promotional materials for various audiences
  • Develop and implement digital marketing strategies; monitor the impact of strategies
  • Manage the college’s website, including drafting, posting, and removing outdated content
  • Produce email campaigns and newsletters, and manage newsletter distribution lists
  • Serve as a brand steward and ensure all communications and marketing efforts adhere to the College of Education’s brand guidelines
  • Monitor a wide range of analytics, including social media metrics, click-through rates for email communications, website traffic and media coverage
  • Attend college-wide events to help with logistics and curate content, with the expectation of occasional night and weekend responsibilities
  • Assist in developing and implementing effective PR strategies
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Three (3) years of professional communications experience
  • Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five to seven (5-7) years of professional communications experience.
  • Experience working with the media
  • Ability to capture high-quality photos and videos
  • Strong understanding of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) best practices
  • Experience planning, managing and implementing marketing or communications campaigns across a range of digital and traditional media
  • Proficiency with social media platforms (i.e., X, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads)
  • Experience with Google Analytics
  • Familiarity with web content management systems, such as Drupal
  • Familiarity with design software/programs (i.e., Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, etc.)
  • Experience using CRM email platforms, such as MailChimp and Salesforce
  • Proficiency with social media platforms and PR tools (i.e., Cision, Falcon, etc.)
