Job Description

WHRO Public Media is seeking an ambitious and innovative Team Editor to join our growing newsroom, dedicated to keeping Southeast Virginia and Northeast North Carolina informed and connected.

The Team Editor is a key member of our editorial team that oversees the daily production of compelling stories across multiple platforms. Collaborating closely with the News Director and future editors, Team Editors think creatively about how to craft and present stories from idea to final product.

Team Editors:

• Lead and Innovate: Supervise the creation of on-air radio segments and digital news stories, ensuring all stories meet WHRO’s high standards for accuracy, diversity, and quality.

• Collaborate and Guide: Work with a dynamic team of 3-5 reporters, assigning stories, managing workloads and providing editorial oversight. Your expertise will help reporters refine their stories, focusing on clarity, grammar and ethical considerations.

• Champion Diversity: Embrace and enhance WHRO’s commitment to inclusive journalism by using our source diversity tracker to ensure our coverage reflects the rich voices of the community.

• Develop Talent: Partner with the News Director to design and implement training programs that foster the professional growth of our reporters.

The ideal candidate will be:

• Creative and Organized: Bring fresh ideas to how stories are told and presented, balancing creativity and experimentation with multiple daily deadlines.

• Adaptable and Engaged: Willing to work non-traditional hours, including nights, to cover public meetings and breaking news.

• Community-Focused: Dedication to serving the Hampton Roads community through thoughtful and diverse reporting.

• Experienced: While prior radio experience is a plus, a strong grasp of multi-platform storytelling is essential and at least 4 years of journalism experience is required.

Why Join Us?
